Libyan FA (LFF) has strongly condemned the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and Super Eagles for its refusal to play against Libya in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, following an airport incident that occurred in Libya.
According to the LFF, this decision by Nigeria has caused unnecessary disruptions, and they are now preparing to take legal action to address the matter, Footballrover reports.
In a public statement, the Libyan Football Federation expressed its dissatisfaction with Nigeria’s stance, accusing the NFF of failing to uphold their responsibilities, which ultimately led to the cancellation of the scheduled match.
The AFCON qualifying fixture, originally set for Tuesday, October 15, was to be the second leg between the two nations, following a previous match in Nigeria.
The LFF highlighted that despite several challenges, the Libyan team managed to fulfil their obligations during the first-leg match in Nigeria.
The Federation also provided footage of what it described as “inhumane” conditions that the Libyan team endured, insisting that these hardships did not deter them from playing.
However, they noted that Nigeria had refused to show similar cooperation in the second leg.
Libyan Federation plans legal measures to address Nigeria’s withdrawal
The Libyan Football Federation has emphasised that their Nigerian counterparts failed to cooperate throughout both legs of the qualifying tie.
Citing the incident at the Libyan airport, the LFF maintains that Super Eagles’ refusal to play cannot be justified by the challenges they faced.
They argue that these disruptions pale in comparison to what the Libyan team experienced in Nigeria.
The Libyan FA also expressed regret over the situation, offering an apology to Libyan football fans only and the parties involved in organising the match.
The LFF believes that the confusion caused by Nigeria’s withdrawal not only disappointed fans but also affected the integrity of the tournament.
As the situation unfolds, the LFF has reiterated its intention to pursue legal action to protect the interests of the Libyan national team.
