The UEFA Nations League Group A1 encounter between Croatia and France finished in a 1-1 tie on Monday night at the Stadion Poljud, with both teams sharing the spoils.

Croatia’s international break got off to a poor start as they were crushed 3-0 by Austria last time out, but they came out stronger in this match, with Budimir in particularly causing France problems.

The world champions, who aren’t in the best of form after losing 2-1 at home to Denmark in Paris only a few days ago, settled into the game and had a quality chance saved by Livakovic just before halftime.

This sluggish game sprang to life in the second half, when Rabiot’s deft goal gave Les Bleus the deserved lead.

Croatia, on the other hand, refused to accept defeat and were rewarded late in the game when substitute Kramaric won and dispatched a penalty.

Both sides had late chances to win, but a draw feels like a fair outcome.

Didier Deschamps’ side will be unhappy not to have held on for the win after being tipped to top Group A1 and possessing a wealth of potential.

In the Nations League this season, they’ve now squandered five points from winning positions.

If they are to reclaim the World Cup in December, they must tighten up.

They are now third in Group A1, five points behind Denmark, who defeated Austria 1-0. Croatia is the team with the lowest goal difference.
