Super Eagles star Kelechi Iheanacho made a promising debut for Sevilla, but his impact was not enough to prevent a 2-1 defeat against Villarreal in their La Liga opener.
Iheanacho, who joined Sevilla from Leicester City in the summer transfer window, came off the bench late in the game and had a couple of promising moments, Footballrover reports.
Sevilla manager Javier Pimienta praised the Nigerian forward’s performance, suggesting that he could have been the difference-maker in the match.
Iheanacho’s debut came after featuring in just one pre-season game for Sevilla, and he completely missed out in their opening game of the season.
Iheanacho was introduced into the game against Villarreal in the 77th minute after replacing Isaac Romero, with both teams already playing out a 1-1 draw at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán.
And yes, his debut performance did offer a glimmer of hope for the club’s fans.
However, after the match, Sevilla manager Javier Pimienta praised the Nigerian international for his impressive debut for the club.
The former Manchester City star nearly scored late in the game, but Ayoze Perez stole the moment for Villarreal, which led the Sevilla boss to claim that Kelechi Iheanacho might have faced the most challenges because he played for a shorter time.
“But he moved very well in that difficult moment of the match, and he had a very clear chance to score, and the goalkeeper was able to stop that play,” Pimienta said.
Sevilla are now without a win in their first two league matches and will be looking to bounce back to winning ways when they face Mallorca in their next La Liga match on Tuesday.
