An emotional Kelechi Iheanacho has expressed his hope that Leicester City can recover after suffering relegation from the Premier League and being pushed down to Championship.
Iheanacho was visibly moved, almost to the point of tears, as he tried to articulate the feelings surrounding the club’s descent into the second tier, which was confirmed on the final day of the season.
Despite Iheanacho’s contribution in setting up Harvey Barnes’ goal in the victory over West Ham, Everton’s win against Bournemouth meant that Leicester’s efforts were in vain.
Although they managed to go 2-0 up with goals from Barnes and Wout Faes, Pablo Fornals’ consolation goal for West Ham had no impact on the final outcome.
This relegation marks a significant downfall for Leicester City, considering their previous triumph as Premier League champions in 2016.
The club has experienced more recent success under manager Brendan Rodgers, including winning the FA Cup in 2021 and securing back-to-back fifth-placed finishes.
However, it will be the Championship next season for Super Eagles’ duo – Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi, but the former Man City striker is hopeful of bouncing back.
While speaking to LCFC TV, Iheanacho said;
āI donāt even know how I feel right now. Iām so disappointed. I donāt know what to say. I just need to thank the football club, the fans, everyone who has supported us from the start to now. I know itās a hard one to take but if life kicks you, you just need to stand up and keep going. Whatever it is, we just keep going, stay strong, and hopefully we get back up.”
He added that;
“Nobodyās really happy at this time. Itās a bad time for the club and everyone. We need to take it on the chin and move on. Itās really not what we want but we canāt go back now. We have to move forward.ā
While the relegation represents the end of a glorious period for the club, Leicester City will now strive to make an immediate return to the Premier League.
Iheanacho remains optimistic and believes that looking forward is the only option for the team as they aim to bounce back from this setback.
