Super Eagles forward Josh Maja finally broke his 37-day goal drought in spectacular fashion, delivering a stunning brace to inspire West Bromwich Albion’s dominant 3-1 victory over Preston North End in their Championship round 25 clash at the Hawthorns.
Josh Maja’s brace sets the ball rolling for West Brom
The 26-year-old Nigerian forward opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a composed finish after Darnell Furlong’s clever cutback, Footballrover reports.
His clinical touch set the pace for the home side, who were desperate to return to winning ways following a run of poor results, including a 2-1 loss to Derby County and a 1-1 draw against Sheffield United.
Callum Styles doubled the lead in the 35th minute, capitalising on a well-executed corner routine to slot home from close range.
Just before halftime, the one-cap Super Eagles star struck again, finishing from close range after another assist from Furlong.
The brace marked Josh Maja’s first goals since November 26, when he scored in a 2-2 draw against Norwich.
West Brom strengthens their position in the league
Despite their commanding first-half performance, West Brom failed to extend their lead in the second half.
Preston pulled one back through Ryan Ledson, but the damage had already been done.
Maja, who was substituted in the 74th minute, finished the game with two goals, bringing his season tally to 12 goals and two assists in 25 appearances.
This crucial win lifts West Brom to fifth place in the Championship standings with 39 points, solidifying their playoff aspirations.
They now turn their attention to an upcoming fixture against Swansea City on Sunday.
