In a shocking Trendyol Super League upset, Nigerian forward Jonathan Okoronkwo spearheaded relegated Hatayspor’s emphatic 4-2 victory over Fenerbahce on Monday evening.
The 21-year-old netted the fourth goal for his side at the Mersin Stadyumu, marking his third league goal in 14 appearances, alongside one assist, Footballrover reports.
Despite their impending relegation, Hatayspor delivered a memorable performance in their final home game.
How Jonathan Okoronkwo’s goal rattled Fenerbahce
Fenerbahce initially took the lead in the 27th minute through En Nesyri, following a defensive error.
However, Hatayspor fought back, equalising in the 44th minute with a Massanga free-kick that deflected off the goalkeeper. The second half saw Hatayspor take control.
Bilal Boutobba capitalised on a goalkeeping mistake in the 53rd minute to put them ahead, and Görkem Sağlam extended their lead from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute.
Okoronkwo’s decisive goal against Fenerbahce
The 66th minute saw Jonathan seal a remarkable victory for Hatayspor, slotting home after a through pass from Sağlam, making it 4-1.
Although İrfan Can Kahveci scored a late consolation goal for Fenerbahce in added time,
it wasn’t enough to change the outcome. Fenerbahce also had Mert Müldür sent off in the 38th minute, their first red card of the season.
This unexpected defeat marks Fenerbahce’s heaviest of the season.
Despite finishing second in the league with 81 points, they were stunned by a Hatayspor side already relegated.
Hatayspor, finishing 18th with 26 points, provided their fans with a final moment of joy before their journey to the Trendyol 1st League begins.
