Following their dramatic 2-1 victory over Ipswich Town during their Premier League game on Saturday, Southampton manager Ivan Juric couldn’t contain his admiration for Joe Aribo, whose unexpected shift to an unfamiliar role turned the game around.
Aribo’s incredible performance, both in attack and defence, helped secure crucial points for the Saints in a match full of surprises, Footballrover reports.
Joe Aribo’s incredible performance: A game-changer at left centre-back
After scoring Southampton’s opening goal in the 21st minute, Aribo was thrust into a defensive role at left centre-back due to injuries within the squad.
With Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Jack Stephens both sidelined, Juric praised Aribo’s adaptability and determination, calling his performance “exceptional.”
His calmness in finishing a goal following an Ipswich goalkeeper error was impressive, but his defensive composure in an unfamiliar position was even more vital to the win.
“We had problems with Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Jack Stephens. Today I have to say Joe Aribo was exceptional; he played at left centre-back, and he played an incredible game,” Juric told Sky Sports after the game, as quoted by the BBC.
Tactical shift pays off: Aribo’s versatility shines
Despite his usual role as a midfielder, Aribo stepped up in defence and helped Southampton withstand mounting pressure from Ipswich in the second half.
The Saints’ defence line was put to the test after multiple injuries, but Aribo’s leadership at the back allowed Southampton to hold firm.
“Joe [Aribo] for me is a great guy; everything for the team. He doesn’t care if he is a forward, at the back or in the middle. I think he did a great second half. We worked really hard, really well, and Joe today was great,” Juric added.
Paul Onuachu’s late strike sealed the victory, but it was Aribo’s incredible performance that stood out to Juric as a key factor in the win.
Aribo’s versatility proved invaluable in Southampton’s fight for survival. As the Saints struggle in the league, the manager may look to continue using Aribo in a defensive role, should injury woes persist.
