After leaving the Bundesliga and the Scottish league, respectively, two Nigerian players, Joe Aribo and Taiwo Awoniyi, had hoped for a joyous welcome into the Premier League, but it all ended in heartbreaking defeats.
The Super Eagles duo made their respective Premier League debuts on Saturday for Southampton and Nottingham Forest, but neither of them was able to live up to the hype, and everything ended in humiliating losses.
Joe Aribo played against a Tottenham team who dominated the first half and improved their efficiency in the second, cruising to three well-deserved points on the first day of their 2022β23 season.
With a bit of assistance from Salisu’s error, the home team successfully ended the match by taking a 3-1 lead at the hour mark.
The Antonio Conte team fully demonstrated that they didn’t need goals from Son or Harry Kane to defeat their Premier League counterpart with four goals.
In comparison, Southampton had little to display for their efforts outside of Ward-Prowse’s goal, and if they are unable to generate more creative threats, another difficult season may be in store for them.

At the other end of another crushing defeat is Super Eagles forward – Taiwo Awoniyi, who faced a strong Newcastle side that secured their first win of the season.
Taiwo Awoniyi made his English Premier League debut as a sub in Nottingham Forestβs defeat at Newcastle, after featuring for just 27 minutes in the encounter.
The Magpies were in complete control from the beginning to the end, and it was only Schar’s thunderbolt that allowed the pressure to eventually register.
With his goal and Wilson’s follow-up goal 20 minutes later, the Magpies were guaranteed the victory and the three points.

When Forest returned to the top flight, they didn’t give much and were a touch shell-shocked, but they did occasionally display encouraging moments for their supporters to take away.
Definitely not the kind of start that many Super Eagles supporters wanted for Taiwo Awoniyi and Joe Aribo. Their talent is undeniable, and the EPL will eventually provide them the opportunity to flourish.
