In an effort to increase the depth of their midfield, Chelsea have finalized the signing of Denis Zakaria on loan from Juventus on Thursday.

The Blues earlier wanted to grab the services of Edson Alvarez from Ajax or Ibrahim Sangare from PSV, but neither deal was successful at the end of the day, so they were left with no choice than to sign Zakaria on a short term basis.

Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Wesley Fofana, and Marc Cucurella were among the nine players that the Blues signed during this eventful transfer period, which was the first under their new owner Todd Boehly.

Last in line was Fofana, whose acquisition was officially announced on the final day of the transfer window, right after that, Barcelona striker – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang followed up.

For the main time, Chelsea will paying Zakaria’s loan fee and also have the option to extend it permanently if they wish, which is at the end of the 2022–23 season.

According to reports, Spurs tried to sign Zakaria, but official negotiations never got going and along the line, Borussia Dortmund, who had previously kept an eye on him, also came forward.

However, Footballrover gathered that it was Chelsea’s bid that enabled Juventus to pay Zakaria’s whole wage, despite the Swiss midfielder also receiving solid offers from Roma and Monaco.

Because of the financial burden caused by the acquisition of Paul Pogba, the Bianconeri had no option than to loan out Zakaria.

The Thomas Tuchel side will now be required to pay an initial loan fee of €3 million as well as an extra €1 million in future add-ons for the 2022–23 season only.

If Blues decides they want to sign the 25-year-old outright after the loan time is through, they can do so for a price of €28 million plus €5 million in add-ons.

After his arrival, Denis Zakaria stated that it was time for new experiences and adventures in order to better develop himself. He also expressed his happiness over the fantastic opportunity at Chelsea as it was the ideal way to improve his goals.

Under Thomas Tuchel’s direction, the Swiss international will be looking to resurrect his career at Stamford Bridge and inspire the Blues following a challenging start to the season.

“He gives us a lot of options because he has a lot of speed, height and physicality to bring to this group. He can play in a back 3. He played for Monchengladbach in a back 4 as a central defender even. He can play both positions in midfield.” – Tuchel said.
