Ishaq Kayode grabbed his 12th goal of the season to help Rivers United tame their bitter rivals – Enyimba during their Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) game in Port Harcourt on Monday afternoon.
Two first half goals from Ishaq Kayode and Chiamaka Madu proved decisive as Rivers United overcame Enyimba International 2-0.
Coach Stanley Eguma made three changes to the starting eleven that defeated Katsina United 1-0 on matchday 22 in Katsina, bringing back Kazie Enyinnaya, Morice Chukwu, and Fabian Nworie.
Both teams needed to win in this match, but it was United who got off to a fast start, winning a penalty barely 18 minutes into the game.
The referee whistled for a penalty kick after Ishaq Kayode was hauled down in the 18-yard box. He took the penalty kick and converted it to give the home team a well-deserved lead.
The opener was Ishaq’s 12th goal of the season in the NPFL.
In the 30th minute, the Pride of Rivers almost doubled their lead when Akuneto’s cross fell for Nyima Nwagua, but he failed to connect.
Chiamaka Madu then made it 2-0 for the Stanley Eguma side three minutes later, finishing a great team move with Nyima Nwagua, who gave the assist.
The hosts came close to making it 3-0 after Onoja connected brilliantly with Chiamaka Madu and the later shoots but his effort wasn’t powerful enough to cause any damage.
Rivers United kept on fighting, in search of a third goal to complete the rout, but the scoreline ended that way with Rivers United grabbing all three points.
With the victory, Rivers United have now won 12 straight NPFL games. This is the NPFL’s longest unbeaten streak of the season.
United maintains a four-point lead at the top of the table with 52 points after 23 games, while Enyimba drops to ninth position with 32 points.
