Notwithstanding their valiant attempts, Inter were able to beat Liverpool but are eliminated from the Champions League, while the Reds, despite the loss on Tuesday night at Anfield, advances to the quarter-finals.
Martinez’s brilliant strike decided the match, but not the tie as the Premier League side’s unusual home loss could have ended very differently had they not squandered couple of chances that hit the goal frame.
Inter tied the game at 61 minutes when Lautaro Martinez made light of his lacklustre performance by getting a couple of steps to place himself on the left corner of the box before firing a powerful shot into the top corner.

😮 An epic performance and victory at Anfield but it's not enough as we bow out of the #UCL

But the visitors were down to ten men two minutes later. Alexis Sanchez took a swing carelessly into a challenge with Thiago just moments after pulling the team back into the game, getting himself a second booking and the former Man United star was sent off.
Sanchez’s red card put an end to the Nerazzurri’s comeback, as their hosts advanced to the quarterfinals once more.
Liverpool have now lost a home match for the first time since losing to Fulham in the Premier League in March 2021, after going 28 games without defeat at Anfield.

With their quadruple dreams still alive, the Reds will have to battle Brighton this weekend.
Inter, on the other hand, must restore their focus to domestic matters; despite having already won the Suppercoppa, they remain in competition for a league and cup double.
