Ikorodu City FC have continued their impressive run in the 2024 Valuejet Cup preseason tournament with a shocking victory over Sudanese Champions Al Merrikh in Valuejet Cup on Friday.Ā
The Oga Boys humbled CAF Champions League contender Al Merrikh with a convincing 2-1 win at the Remo Stars stadium, Footballrover reports.
The Lagos-based team came into this game after pulling off a 1-1 against Remo Stars B in their opening fixtures.
While their counterparts also came into the game after securing a narrow 1-0 win over the defending champions of the tournament, Shooting Stars.
The game started on a bright note for both sides, but it was Ikorodu City who quickly showed that they are not an easy workover.
The encounter exploded into life early on when Ikorodu City was awarded a penalty after just five minutes.
Farouk Salami stepped up to convert the spot kick, to hand the team an early lead.
The Sudanese giants Al Merrikh fought back valiantly and looked to have equalised through Mohammed Gbane, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
However, just before halftime, the Sudanese side found an equaliser through a stunning volley from Mohammed Hashim.
The second half was a tense affair, with both teams creating chances.
Yet again, it was Ikorodu City who struck the decisive blow when Alade Solomonās well-placed shot found the back of the net in the 80th minute.
The Nigerian side held on for a famous victory that stunned a lot of fans watching the tournament.
