Ifeoma Onumonu has revealed why she wasted no time in following fellow Nigerian star Akor Adams to enjoy French football by signing for Montpellier women’s team.
Earlier in August 2023, Montpellier made headlines when they secured the signature of former Flying Eagles forward Akor Adams for £5.5 million, Footballrover reports.
Now, the Super Falcons forward, Onumonu, has joined the club’s women’s section in an undisclosed deal.
Onumonu made the switch from NWSL side Utah Royals to French D’Arkema women’s team, marking her first foray into European football.
The 30-year-old becomes the first Nigerian woman to sign for Montpellier in the club’s history—a landmark move for both player and club.
Born in California, the towering striker has spent her entire career in the United States, excelling at both the collegiate and professional levels.
Her decision to venture abroad comes at a time when many players are exploring new challenges outside their comfort zones.
In her first official interview with Montpellier, Ifeoma expressed her excitement about this new chapter, eager to embrace both the on-field challenges and her new life in France.
Speaking on why she didn’t think twice about joining Montpellier, Onumonu was clear:
“I needed a change. I have played in the USA for my entire career and club so far, and I had in the back of my mind the desire to discover European football. When this opportunity presented itself here in Montpellier, I didn’t hesitate.”
Montpellier’s president, Laurent Nicollin, also welcomed Onumonu, expressing his confidence that she would strengthen the team’s attack.
He hopes the Nigerian international will settle in quickly and make a significant impact.
It’s a joy to watch both Akor Adams and Ifeoma Onumonu fly the Nigerian flag in Montpellier.
