Chelsea women squad failed to achieve a hat-trick of Continental League Cup victories, as Manchester City’s second-half comeback doomed them to a crushing defeat at Plough Lane.
The Blues had the potential to win their first trophy of the current season after getting to the final of the tournament for the third year running after winning the domestic Quadruple in 2020/21, but they failed spectacularly.
It was a tough encounter between two teams who had won the vast bulk of the silverware available during the previous seven years.

The Blues female side came alive in the first half after Lauren Hemp rocked the post from point blank range, and they rightfully went ahead when Ellie Roebuck delivered a cross at the feet of Sam Kerr, who converted neatly.

However, their jubilation was short-lived because City raced ahead and wiped out Chelsea’s advantage inside 15 minutes of the second half’s start.
Caroline Weir equalised for the Citizens with a powerful shot from the edge of the box, and Ellen White scrambled one in after Ann-Katrin Berger had saved a threatening Hemp shot.

After Weir beautifully volleyed City into a 3-1 lead, the Emma Hayes side were unable to create any meaningful chances but instead found themselves with a two-goal deficit to overturn.
Chelsea’s focus now shifts to the Women’s Super League and the FA Cup, with the club aiming to defend both trophies in the closing months of the season.
