Graham Potter’s home coming ended in tears and a crushing defeat as Brighton recorded a spectacular first victory in the Roberto De Zerbi era and handed the Chelsea manager his first loss.
GrahamΒ Potter’s return to the Amex Stadium finished in a five-goal thriller, and guess what? Its the first time ever in the club’s history, Brighton defeated Chelsea in a league match.
Before Trossard scored in the fifth minute, Brighton’s tremendous pace in the opening minutes caused Silva to clear the ball twice.
He edged out Cucurella on the line, and then dribbled past Kepa to find back of the net. Chelsea went on score their first own-goal of the half as Loftus-Cheek used his knee to bounce in March’s cross in the 14th minute.
Before halftime, Chalobah turned Estupinan’s cross into his own goal, giving Brighton a three-goal lead. Sanchez was forced into several outstanding saves, the best of which came from a Gallagher header.
At the start of the second half, Havertz immediately restored parity by heading in a precise cross from Gallagher.
In extra time, Gross scored from a rebound to make it 4-1 after Mendy had stopped two shots from Enciso. Despite Chelsea’s efforts, they were ineffective in adding more goals.
While Brighton climbs to seventh place in the Premier League rankings, Chelsea remains in fifth.
Next weekend, the Blues will host Arsenal before playing Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League. The next league match for Brighton is at Wolves.
Chelsea lost at Brighton for the first time ever, and the 4-1 humiliation means the Blues have gone three games without a victory in the league, putting them five points behind Spurs and three behind Newcastle.
Graham Potter’s nine-game winning streak came to an end, and Brighton also broke the unbeaten streak Chelsea had over them ever since they were promoted to the top division.
If Manchester United wins tomorrow, Graham Potter’s Chelsea club drops all the way to sixth.
