The Bayelsa State President FA Cup semi-final clash between Bayelsa United and Citiboi FC ended in a tense goalless battle in Yenagoa.

Both teams fought hard, but the game’s defining moment came in the 35th minute when Golden Douye, leading Citiboi FC’s attack against his former club, thought he had given his side the lead.

However, his celebrations were short-lived as the goal was ruled out for offside.

Citiboi FC’s fortunes seemed to shift in their favour when Bayelsa United went down to ten men just five minutes later.

Despite having a numerical advantage, Citiboi failed to capitalise, allowing Bayelsa United to hold on and force the game into a penalty shootout.

The penalty shootout was a nerve-wracking affair, ending in a 5-4 victory for Bayelsa United.

Citiboi faltered, missing two crucial penalties—their second and third takers failing to convert.

Bayelsa United also missed twice, but Citiboi’s sudden-death miss sealed their fate.

Speaking to Footballrover after the game, Golden Douye expressed his disappointment, insisting his team deserved to win.

While he acknowledged the officiating was fair, he pointed to a controversial moment in the 83rd minute when Citiboi was denied a penalty that could have changed the outcome.

“The game was well handled, although there was a controversial moment in the 83rd minute when we were supposed to get a penalty, but the referee waved play on. I think it was not our day; otherwise, we would have won,” Douye said.

“I think we deserved to win because we worked very hard in the game. They fielded some players that have not played games for some time in the team,” he added.”

With their semi-final victory secured, Bayelsa United will now shift focus to the final, where they face Krusader FC in a bid for FA Cup glory.
