Super Eagles forward Gift Orban put in a solid effort, but Lyon came up short in a thrilling 3-2 loss to 10-man Marseille in Sunday’s Ligue 1 showdown.
Orban, making his third appearance in the league, couldn’t prevent his side from suffering a narrow defeat at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais, Footballrover reports.
The Nigerian forward played the entire 90 minutes but had little to show for his efforts, managing just two shots.
The 22-year-old has scored two goals this season in three matches but was unable to add to his tally in this encounter.
Lyon had a golden opportunity to capitalise early when Marseille’s Leonardo Balerdi was sent off just five minutes into the game after receiving a second yellow card.
However, they failed to take control, with Alexandre Lacazette missing a penalty, leaving the first half scoreless.
The action picked up in the second half as Duje Caleta-Car gave Lyon the lead. But Marseille responded swiftly, leveling the score through Pol Lirola.
The visitors then took the lead in the 82nd minute with a goal from Ulisses Garcia.
Lyon fought back, equalising in the 93rd minute through Rayan Cherki, only for heartbreak to follow as Jonathan Rowe netted a 95th-minute winner for Marseille.
Despite dominating possession and recording 22 goal attempts compared to Marseille’s nine, Lyon failed to secure a win.
It has been a tough start to the season for Lyon, with just one win from five league games, alongside one draw and three defeats.
After back-to-back losses in their opening two matches, they managed a narrow victory in matchday three, followed by a goalless draw before Sunday’s setback.

This latest defeat leaves Orban and his team in a precarious position, just one point above the relegation zone.
Currently sitting in 14th place on the 18-team table, Lyon will now turn their attention to the Europa League, where they host Olympiacos Piraeus on Thursday.
