Super Falcon star Gift Monday found the back of the net for UD Tenerife, but her goal wasn’t enough to prevent a humiliating defeat as the team conceded 11 goals to Barcelona in just two encounters.
Their Copa De La Reina Round 16 clash on Saturday afternoon ended in a devastating 2-6 loss, further compounding their recent struggles against the Spanish giants, Footballrover reports.
A brief glimmer of hope for UD Tenerife
Gift Monday’s goal came as a brief moment of hope for Tenerife. The 23-year-old Nigerian forward pulled one back for her team just before halftime, leveling the score at 2-2.
It was her fifth goal of the season in just 12 appearances, adding to her tally of two assists.
Earlier in the season, Gift scored a brace against Sevilla, netted the winning goal against Real Betis, and played a key role in a 2-1 win over Athletic Club.
Despite this, the home team’s defence was once again overwhelmed by their visitors.
Barcelona dominates in Copa De La Reina
The away side wasted no time asserting their dominance. Just 20 minutes into the game, Irene Paredes put the visitors ahead.
Ewa Pajor doubled their lead four minutes later, and though Gift’s strike brought her side back into contention, the first half ended with the score tied at 2-2 after Aleksandra Zaremba restored parity for the hosts.
However, the second half was a different story. Alexia Putellas gave Barca women the lead again just 21 minutes after the restart.
Pajor then converted a penalty to extend their advantage to 4-2. As if the night couldn’t get worse for the home fans, Putellas scored again to make it 5-2.
Pajor sealed the comprehensive win with her brace, making it 6-2, ensuring that their hosts were thoroughly outclassed and eliminated from the Copa De La Reina.
A disappointing record for Tenerife against Barcelona
This defeat marks yet another heavy blow for Las Guerreras, who had already suffered a 5-1 loss to Barça Femení just last month in Liga F.
Despite Gift Monday’s valiant efforts, Tenerife’s defence was no match for Barcelona’s attacking power.
Barca women are now through to the semi-finals of Copa de la Reina after demolishing Las Guerreras.
The result extends Barça Femení’s unbeaten streak against the Warriors to 11 matches, further revealing their huge dominance in this fixture.
As for Gift Monday and her teammates, they must regroup and look to bounce back from these two crushing defeats, as the team will need to find a way to shore up their defence and avoid similar humiliations in future encounters.
For now, they will look to their next challenge against Deportivo La Coruna, hoping to recover from the heavy toll these losses have taken on their confidence.
