Gabriel Osho and Samuel Aghehowa endured a torrid weekend as both Nigerian players were sent off in their respective matches, leaving Auxerre and FC Porto to suffer painful losses.
While Osho’s early dismissal worsened Auxerre’s ongoing struggles, Aghehowa’s late red card wrapped up Porto’s disappointing defeat, footballrover reports.
Gabriel Osho’s red card worsens Auxerre’s crisis
Super Eagles defender Gabriel Osho had a frustrating outing as his red card played a role in Auxerre’s 2-0 defeat to Angers at the Stade Raymond Kopa on Sunday.
The loss extended Auxerre’s winless run to seven matches across all competitions, further deepening their relegation worries.
Auxerre’s troubles began early when an 18th-minute own goal by Sinaly Diomande put them behind.
Their situation deteriorated just minutes later when Gabriel Osho received a straight red card for a reckless challenge, leaving his team with ten men.
Despite battling with a numerical disadvantage, Auxerre failed to recover, and Esteban Lepaul doubled Angers’ lead in the 50th minute to seal the victory.
Osho’s dismissal marked his second career red card, with the first coming during his tenure at Luton Town in the 2022-2023 Sky Bet Championship season.
Auxerre now sits just five points above the relegation zone and faces a crucial home fixture against Saint-Étienne, who recently played out a 1-1 draw with Nantes.
Samuel Aghehowa’s late red adds to Porto’s woes
Meanwhile, in Liga Portugal’s Round 18 clash at Estádio Cidade de Barcelos, Samuel Aghehowa’s stoppage-time red card compounded FC Porto’s misery in a 3-1 defeat to Gil Vicente.
Gil Vicente opened the scoring in the 11th minute through Pablo, and tensions escalated as their coach, Bruno Pinheiro, was dismissed just a minute before halftime.
Porto responded early in the second half, with Goncalo Borges equalising in the 48th minute.
However, Josué restored Gil Vicente’s lead eight minutes after the restart, and Porto’s evening worsened when Nico González was shown a red card seven minutes before the closing moment.
In stoppage time, Samuel Aghehowa received his marching orders in the 11th minute of added time, further dashing Porto’s hopes of a comeback.
The defeat saw Porto slip to third place in the Liga Portugal standings with 40 points, while Gil Vicente secured a vital three points.
Auxerre and Porto will now look to regroup as they prepare for their upcoming fixtures, with Gabriel Osho and Samuel Aghehowa obviously facing suspensions.
