U-23 Africa Cup: Guinea’s Win, Morocco’s Domination

After suffering a 1-2 defeat against the host nation, Morocco, in their first group match, Guinea emerged victorious with a 3-1 win over Congo Republic, securing the second spot in the group with 3 points from two matches.

In another match at the same venue, Ghana, another West African nation in the group, suffered a disappointing 1-5 defeat at the hands of Morocco, who now lead Group A with 6 points from two matches.

Ghana had won their first group match against Congo Republic with a thrilling 3-2 victory.

In the opening Group A match, Aguibou Camara scored in the tenth minute of the first half, giving Guinea an early lead with an assist from striker Algassime Bah.

Yannne Ngatse equalized for Congo Republic in the 40th minute, ending the first half with a 1-1 scoreline. Jacque Bowamba increased Guinea’s tally to 2-1 in the 54th minute of the second half.

In the 72nd minute, Congolese goalkeeper Dhody Fontou received a red card, reducing his team to ten men.

Shortly after, Salifou Soumah struck in the 84th minute to secure Guinea’s third goal of the match. The final score was 3-1 in favor of Guinea.

In the second match of the group, played later in the evening, Yanis Begraoui scored two goals and provided an assist in Morocco’s dominant 5-1 victory over Ghana.

Begraoui scored in the 29th and 53rd minutes, contributing to Morocco’s third and fifth goals of the match.

He also assisted Ismael Saibari’s goal in the 14th minute of the first half.

Salim Adams pulled one back for Ghana in the 42nd minute, ending the first half with a 1-3 scoreline in favor of Morocco.

Amir Richardson gave the hosts an early lead in the 6th minute with an assist from Abdessamad Ezzalzouli, who later scored Morocco’s fourth goal in the 48th minute of the second half.

This was Ezzalzouli’s third goal in the U-23 football competition. He had scored a brace for Morocco in their first group match against Guinea on Saturday, June 24, 2024.

Later today, at Ibn Batuta Stadium in Tangier, the defending U-23 Continental Champions, Egypt, will face Mali in a Group B, second round match at 5:00 pm.

Gabon and Niger Republic will also compete in the group’s second match at 10:00 pm.

Mali currently leads Group B with 3 points, while Egypt and Niger Republic are in second and third place, respectively, with 1 point each from the first match of the group.

Gabon is at the bottom of the group with no points in the competition.
