CAF Champions League: Esperance hold Al-Merrikh to draw at the Red Castle

Esperance of Tunisia were undaunted in faraway Sudan as they held Al-Merrikh of Sudan to a 1-1 draw in Group D, Round 5 of the CAF Champions League match played at Al-Merrikh Stadium.CAF Champions League: Esperance hold Al-Merrikh to draw at the Red Castle

Esperance drew the first blood against the host in the 23rd minute of the first half through Mohammed Ali Ben Hamm.

The hosts equalized in the dead minute of the second half through Paulo Sergio to escape a humiliating loss at home.

With the away draw, Esperance of Tunisia has consolidated their hold on Group D leadership with 10 points after five rounds of matches.

Algerian League Champions Belouizdad is second on the rung with 6 points after 4 matches, while Sudanese Champions Al-Merrikh are third with 5 points after 5 matches.

Egyptian giants Zamalek were last on the table with 4 points after 4 rounds of matches.

Meanwhile, in the CAF Champions League Group B, Round 5 match, another Egyptian giant, Al Ahly, walloped Cameroonian League Champions, Coton Sport de Garoua, 4–0 at Adjia Stadium.

Al Ahly scored four goals against the host within 54 minutes.

Al Ahly’s attacking ace, Kahraba, was the hero for the visiting team after he scored a hat-trick in the match.

Kahraba scored in the 23rd, 29th, and 51st minutes of the first and second halves of the match, with former South African international Percy Tau assisting the second and third goals for the Egyptian giants.

Percy Tau put his name on the scoresheet in the 54th minute of the second half for Al Ahly’s fourth goal of the match.

Hussein El Shahat replaced the South African football star in the 78th minute of the second half of the match.

Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa is topping Group B with 10 points after four rounds of matches.

Al Hilal of Sudan is second with 9 points after 4 matches, while Al Ahly is third with 7 points after 5 matches.

Coton Sport are last in the group with zero points.
