Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle struck a firm but proud tone after Nigeria’s commanding 2-0 victory over Algeria in the AFCON 2025 quarter-final, insisting that higher standards and continued hard work remain non-negotiable despite the impressive result.
Speaking at his post-match press conference, Eric Chelle dismissed any discussion around bonuses, making it clear his attention was fully on the task at hand, Footballrover reports.
Eric Chelle keeps Super Eagles focused after Algeria win
The Eagles head coach stressed that the focus before kickoff was solely on delivering a strong performance against a dangerous Algerian side — and his players responded in style.
Chelle praised the discipline and commitment shown by his team, describing the win as deserved but not a reason to relax.
For him, progress at AFCON 2025 depends on consistency rather than celebration.
Goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams sealed the Super Eagles’ place in the semi-finals, with both strikes coming in an excellent second-half display.
Osimhen opened the scoring in the 47th minute, powering home a fine header from Bruno Onyemaechi’s cross.
Ten minutes later, Osimhen turned provider, slipping a smart pass to Akor Adams, who calmly rounded the goalkeeper and finished into an empty net to make it 2-0. Osimhen’s all-round display earned him the Man of the Match award.
Despite the dominant showing, Chelle was quick to remind his players that the job is far from done.
“It was a great game. We played well to win, and I’m very proud of the players. We work a lot and deserve this victory, but this is just one game. If you want to stay ambitious, you have to work again. We have a big game in a few days, so we will continue to work,” Chelle noted.
AFCON 2025 ambition grows as Super Eagles eye Morocco
The Super Eagles will now turn their attention to a crucial semi-final clash against hosts Morocco on Wednesday, January 14, as they continue their push for a fourth continental title.
The other semi-final will see Senegal face seven-time champions Egypt, setting up a thrilling conclusion to AFCON 2025.
For Eric Chelle, the message is clear: strong performances are welcome, but only sustained standards will deliver success.
