Enyimba’s storied history in African football was once again on display on Friday, as the People’s Elephant secured a goalless draw against Etoile Filante of Burkina Faso in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round fixture.
While the result wasn’t what fans hoped for, it showed the club’s defensive resilience and rich continental experience, having played more games in CAF competitions than any other Nigerian side, Footballrover reports.
A Glimpse of Enyimba’s Continental Glory
Enyimba’s ties with Etoile Filante run deep. The two teams first clashed in March 2002, marking Enyimba’s entry into continental football.
Since then, the Aba Elephant have played an unmatched 157 continental matches, showing their dominance over other NPFL teams on the African stage.
Friday’s clash saw them rekindle an old rivalry with the Burkinabe side, one they have historically overcome, having won all three previous ties against clubs from Burkina Faso.
However, despite their rich history, Enyimba find themselves in unfamiliar territory.
The goalless result in Ouagadougou extended their winless run on the continent currently to five matches—their longest since a seven-game drought in the 2004 CAF Champions League.

This unwanted record now haunts their current CAF Confederation Cup campaign, but their defensive steel in Burkina Faso offered hope heading into the return leg.
Missed Opportunities and Defensive Strength
Yemi Olanrewaju’s men put on a commendable defensive performance, holding Etoile Filante at bay throughout the 90 minutes.
Enyimba’s backline, led by a composed and organised defence, ensured that the Burkinabe hosts had few opportunities to threaten John Noble’s goal.
However, Enyimba’s struggles in front of goal were apparent. Despite creating a handful of chances, the People’s Elephant failed to find the net, leaving them with a lot to do in the return leg.
The Road Ahead
The goalless draw means that everything is still to play for when Enyimba hosts the second leg at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, on Sunday, September 22.
With home advantage and a fervent Nigerian crowd behind them, the People’s Elephant will need to rediscover their attacking flair if they are to advance to the next round of the competition.
A win is imperative for Yemi Olanrewaju’s side as they look to avoid an upset that would dent their continental dreams.
The two-time CAF Champions League winners are now under pressure to perform, especially in light of Nigeria’s other representative, El-Kanemi Warriors, being knocked out by Dadje FC of Benin in the earlier round.
With their experience, Enyimba will hope to turn things around and continue to push the flag of Nigeria in the competition.
