It was indeed a painful setback in Ilorin. Enyimba’s struggles continued as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat to Kwara United in a rescheduled NPFL week 16 match at the Ilorin Township Stadium.
This marks the third consecutive loss for the nine-time league champions in all competitions, a feat not seen since July 2022, Footballrover reports.
With mounting pressure, Enyimba’s quest for a 10th domestic title seems increasingly uncertain.
Enyimba crumbles under Kwara United’s early blitz
The Harmony Boys wasted no time in asserting dominance, with former Nigerian youth international Wasiu Alade converting a penalty in the 6th minute.
Junior Aimufu doubled the lead in the 37th minute, leaving Enyimba trailing by two goals at halftime.
Despite their best efforts to claw back in the second half, the Aba Elephants failed to break through Kwara United’s resilient defence.
This loss comes just days after a 2-0 defeat to Kano Pillars and follows their early exit from the CAF Confederation Cup after a 3-1 loss to Zamalek.
Under new coach Stanley Eguma, Enyimba have now lost two of their last four league games—a worrying trend compared to the two losses in 15 games under former coach Yemi Olanrewaju.
Title hopes hanging by a thread
Enyimba’s recent form leaves them in 9th place on the NPFL table with 27 points, just one above Kwara United in 11th.
With only one outstanding match, the People’s Elephants face a serious battle to reignite their campaign.
Their next challenge comes on Thursday when they host Heartland FC in a rescheduled week 21 fixture.
As Nigeria’s most successful club with nine league titles, the Aba-based team must dig deep to avoid further setbacks and rediscover the form that once made them champions.
