Amobi Ezeaku, the General Manager of Enugu Rangers, recently disclosed the NPFL club’s strategic plans to establish a comprehensive youth development programme, spanning from U-13 to U-17 levels.
Speaking during a lively Twitter space interaction with fans, Ezeaku highlighted the club’s intentions to revamp their existing academy, emphasising a focused approach for the U-13 to U-17 categories.
He emphasised that the current setup, inherited upon their tenure, does not align with the club’s envisioned developmental pathway, Footballrover reports
“In the strategic plan we laid out some months ago, the current academy will be revisited. That was the academy that we saw when we took over, but thats not the idea behind what we want to achieve,” Amobi said.
He stressed the importance of providing natural pitches for younger players, expressing his reservations about having U-13 boys and girls play on synthetic surfaces.
Exploring sustainable measures, Ezeaku highlighted ongoing dialogues to maximise resources in these developmental endeavours.
“We want to establish our U-13 to U-17, and it must clearly be earmarked. We are already talking with schools. About last month, we discussed with Government Technical College (GTC), and they have a nice pitch. I discussed with their principal, who is a lawyer, what we want to do is start using that pitch because I am not of the view that U-13 boys and girls should play on synthetic pitches,” he said.
The club has demonstrated its dedication to developing young players who will eventually join the senior team by working with educational institutions and giving priority to natural pitches for youth development.
Enugu Rangers’ groundbreaking approach to youth development has the potential to completely transform the Coal City side’s scouting and grooming of talents, providing aspiring footballers with a supportive atmosphere in which to refine their skills.
The club’s strategic emphasis on youth development not only fits with its long-term goals but also shows that it is committed to building a strong football culture at the local level, which might serve as a model for other clubs around the country to follow.
