The Super Eagles’ interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has shed light on what Victor Boniface is facing in front of goal, offering insight into what the striker needs to do to break his scoring drought.
Boniface, who was included in Nigeria’s starting XI for their 1-0 win over Libya in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, struggled to make an impact in the match, Footballrover reports.
The game, held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, saw the Super Eagles secure a late victory, thanks to Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s 90th-minute strike, assisted by Simon Moses.
Despite a promising setup, Boniface, filling in for the injured Victor Osimhen, was unable to find the back of the net.
The Bayer Leverkusen forward worked tirelessly throughout the match but was eventually substituted in the 74th minute, making way for Taiwo Awoniyi.
Speaking after the match, Eguavoen provided some insight into the striker’s form, saying:
“Boniface needs to make quick decisions, I think he will start scoring soon.”
Boniface faces more pressure in AFCON qualifier return leg
With expectations still high, Boniface is likely to retain his spot in the starting lineup for Nigeria’s return fixture against Libya in Benghazi on October 15.
The Super Eagles, sitting atop Group D with seven points from three matches, will be looking to build on their unbeaten run, having scored four goals without conceding.
The 22-year-old Boniface, who has been impressive at club level for Bayer Leverkusen, is yet to replicate that form for the national team.
Many Nigerians will be eager to see if he can unlock his scoring potential in the upcoming match.
Nigeria’s confidence remains strong heading into the clash, knowing a win will further seal their lead in the group as they inch closer to securing qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
