After nearly 13 years of playing abroad, Ebi Onome made her long-awaited return to the Nigerian Women’s Football League (NWFL) on Wednesday, suiting up for her new team, Naija Ratels.
The Super Falcons defender marked her return to Nigeria’s domestic league after an impressive career abroad with a resilient performance for Naija Ratels, Footballrover reports
Although Ratels fell to Nasarawa Amazons 3-1 in their season opener, Onome’s presence and impact on the league is undeniable.
“I am super proud to have achieved this goal of coming back to our own league after almost 13 years of playing abroad, a journey I thought was impossible to accomplish, but here I am, played my first game today with my new team in Nigeria Niger Ratels,” Onome said after the match.
Despite the loss, Onome’s infectious positivity and dedication to inspiring young players were evident.
She expressed immense joy in witnessing the camaraderie between both teams, noting that some of her opponents approached her after the game to express their admiration.
“The joy I felt seeing both my team young stars and our opponent taking pictures after the game was priceless. Some player from our opponent side said to me, ‘Thank God I played with you today, it’s like a dream come true for them all, and I was pleased and happy to hear that,” Onome shared.
Onome’s return to the NWFL is not just about personal fulfillment; it’s about inspiring a new generation of female footballers and uplifting the league as a whole.
“That’s my main purpose of coming back, for the young lass to feel my presence and to encourage the league,” Onome asserted.
While the result against Nasarawa Amazons was not what Ratels had hoped for, Onome remains undeterred, emphasizing the importance of learning from mistakes and coming back stronger.
“Not the result we wanted as a team, we will go learn from our mistakes and come back stronger. Nothing is impossible to achieve when you put your mind to it,” Onome concluded.
