David Okereke has continued his fine form in the Turkish Super Lig, scoring in his second consecutive game for Gaziantep FK.
However, his efforts were not enough as Fenerbahçe sealed a late 3-1 victory in a thrilling Matchday 14 clash at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium, Footballrover reports.
Gaziantep entered the match with high hopes after a commanding 3-0 win over Basaksehir in their previous outing, with David wrapping up the victory.
But then, their momentum was halted early as former Sevilla star Youssef En-Nesyri set up Oguz Aydin to give the hosts the lead just three minutes into the game.
David Okereke’s goal not enough as Fenerbahçe’s late dominance overwhelms Gaziantep
The visitors responded with resilience and were rewarded four minutes before halftime when David Okereke restored parity with a well-taken strike.
Despite their strong display in the first half, Gaziantep’s defence faltered in the latter stages.
Rodrigo Becao capitalised on a Dusan Tadic assist in the 78th minute to reclaim the lead for Fenerbahçe. Edin Dzeko then sealed the victory with a clinical finish in the 90th minute, leaving Gaziantep stunned.
Okereke, who also scored in a 2-2 draw with Kayserispor earlier this season, now boasts three goals and an assist in eight league appearances.
While his performance stood out, fellow Nigerian Bright Osayi-Samuel had a quieter evening for home team before being substituted in the 66th minute.
The defeat leaves Gaziantep in 13th place on the league table with 15 points from 13 matches.
With just four wins this season, the team will look to regroup as they prepare to host Batman Petrolspor next Thursday.
Okereke’s consistency has been a bright spot for Gaziantep, but they must tighten their defence to turn promising performances into crucial points.
