El-Kanemi Warriors left many Nigerians disappointed on Saturday evening as they crashed out of the CAF Confederation Cup following a narrow 2-1 defeat to Dadje FC.
A brace from Bless Salassi was all the Beninese side needed to edge past their Nigerian opponents with a 3-2 win on aggregate in the return leg of their preliminary round tie, Footballrover reports.
Dadje FC made history, ending a 25-year curse and eliminating the NPFL newly promoted side from the CAF Confederation Cup.
After a cautious start to the match, Salassi broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute, converting a penalty to put Dadje FC in the lead.
Just six minutes later, Clement Naantaum equalised for the NPFL Warriors, briefly giving them hope.
However, Salassi struck again with a late goal, doubling his tally just nine minutes before stoppage time, securing the victory for the Benin team.
With this loss, El-Kanemi Warriors have been eliminated from the CAF competition.
El-Kanemi Warriors’ defeat marks yet another chapter in their struggle to secure an away win on the continent.
In their history, they’ve played six away matches, failing to win any, drawing twice, and losing four.
Their lone goal in this game was just their second away goal ever in continental competition.
Dadje FC’s 2-1 victory over El-Kanemi Warriors is even more significant, as it’s the first win by a club from Benin Republic over a Nigerian team since 1998.
This win also snapped a seven-match unbeaten streak by Nigerian clubs against teams from Benin, with a record of four wins and three draws.
El-Kanemi Warriors are now the second Nigerian club to lose a tie to a Beninese team in continental competition, following in the footsteps of BCC Lions, who lost on penalties to AS Dragons FC de l’Ouémé in the 1998 Cup Winners’ Cup.
