Despite the heartbreaking loss at Old Trafford, the Super Eagles striker commended his teammates for their resilience and determination against the Premier League giants, Footballrover reports.

Rangers fall short in thrilling encounter at Old Trafford

In their crucial Europa League group stage fixture, Rangers travelled to the Theatre Of Dreams with hopes of securing an automatic spot in the Round of 16.

Man United, boasting superior quality and European pedigree, were the favourites, but their inconsistent form in recent weeks gave the Scottish side a glimmer of hope.

After a goalless first half, the game came to life in the second period.

A Jack Butland own goal put the hosts ahead, but Rangers responded in the 88th minute when Cyriel Dessers netted his 150th career goal to silence the home crowd.

However, just as the match seemed destined to end in a draw, Bruno Fernandes struck in stoppage time to seal a 2-1 victory for the Red Devils.

Reflecting on the defeat, the Nigerian international admitted that the result was hard to accept, particularly due to the emotional highs and lows in the final moments.

He added that initially, they believed they had secured a valuable point at Old Trafford, only to see it slip away, which was painful.

Despite the disappointment, Dessers praised the performance of his teammates, particularly the younger players who stepped up in the absence of key figures.

“I think we can be very proud of the performance, to come here with a team with a few injuries before the game and then we picked up some more during the game. Young guys had to come in, and I think they did an unbelievable job; they put in a great shift in work ethic and courage in playing forward,” he said.

The Super Eagles star added that,

It is only their second or third game at this level, and that is a big compliment. We thought we had got our reward against a very good team, but then it hurts with the result at the end.”

Cyriel Dessers, who has now scored in back-to-back games, will be eager to maintain his fine form and reclaim his starting role at Ibrox.

With 17 goals and five assists across all competitions, he remains an important asset for Rangers as they prepare for their next Europa League clash against Royale Union SG.
