Cyriel Dessers was full of pride and emotion after scoring a brace and 50th goal for Rangers in a thrilling 3-1 comeback win over Dundee United at Ibrox on Wednesday night.
The Nigerian forward delivered a Man of the Match performance, netting twice to inspire the Gers to victory in their final home fixture of the Scottish Premiership season, Footballrover reports.
Dessers first equalised in the 25th minute with a clinical header before calmly converting a 73rd-minute penalty, bringing his season tally to 28 goals and an overall milestone of 50 goals since his arrival from Cremonese in July 2023.
Brace and 50th goal for Rangers: Dessers reflects on exciting season
Speaking after the game, Cyriel Dessers acknowledged the emotional weight of the moment, describing it as a “beautiful” and “proud” milestone despite a season filled with ups and downs.
“It is very pleasing. As I mentioned before, it’s been a season with ups and downs, too many for everybody’s wishes, but it’s nice to end on a positive feeling here at Ibrox,” he said.
The Super Eagles striker praised his teammates for maintaining composure and quality as the match wore on:
“You know in these games, you can see it also in their players that they are getting more tired and spaces are getting bigger, so you need to keep the patience and keep the quality high. I think we did that, also with the guys that came in.”
Dessers hails teammate’s gesture and cherishes milestone
One of the defining moments of the night was Dessers’ penalty goal—his 50th for Rangers—thanks to a selfless gesture from club captain and regular spot-kick taker James Tavernier.
“We spoke about it a little bit earlier in the week, and I have to thank him for letting me take it. It’s a beautiful moment for me, the 50th goal, and to score it here at Ibrox. That’s something I am very proud of, and it’s a big milestone in my career,” Dessers shared.
He wrapped up by saying the occasion was meaningful not just for him but for everyone connected to the club.
“I think it was a nice moment after the game for everybody—the fans, the players and the staff.”
