Coach Victory Akwaowo has opened up about her team’s disappointing performance after the heartbreaking 3-1 loss to Spartans FC in the Heisclinton Super Cup final.
The only female coach in the competition couldn’t hide her frustration and disappointment in an exclusive interview with Footballrover
Dice FC players failed to put in their best efforts, and the team was ultimately outplayed by a determined Spartans side at the Uniport Sporting Complex on Friday evening.
Despite entering the final with high hopes and confidence, Dice FC fell short, conceding three goals to one, which the coach described as “awful.”.
Speaking to footballrover after the game, the visibly disheartened Coach Akwaowo acknowledged the team’s shortcomings but completely refused to use the word “disappointed” to describe her emotions.Spartans FC
“We didn’t play like we wanted to win. Their head wasn’t in the game,” she stated frankly.
Speaking on the experience—a defeat in the final—and how it will shape her future plans and goals as a coach and individual, she noted that,
“There’s a quote that says, “We lose; go fight another day.” It doesn’t change the dream I have for football as a coach and a player. I will keep pushing forward.
Coach Akwaowo’s assistants, Moses Mfoniso Sunday and Douye Young Solomon, were also visibly disappointed with the outcome.
After the heavy blow, any intention to continue coaching?
“The blow was nothing. If Dice FC has another competition or opponent to face, I’m very much available.”
What lessons have you learned from this tournament, and how will you apply them to your coaching and personal growth?
“Well, like I tell my players, football is about timing and chances, and that is what the opponents used. I have learned that timing is everything, and football is a mind game. We didn’t get that on time.”
Despite the setback, Coach Akwaowo remains optimistic about her team’s future.
“This is just the beginning; there are more opportunities ahead. We tried, but we should try harder next time,” she said.
