Chelsea head coach, Mauricio Pochettino, has finally unveiled the club’s designated penalty taker for 2023/24 season.
The 51-year-old coach pointed out that their recent recruit, Cole Palmer, has emerged as the primary choice for taking penalties, footballrover reports
Palmer, who joined Chelsea from Manchester City this summer, has already displayed his penalty-taking prowess by netting his first goal for the Blues against Burnley earlier this month.
He further displayed his confidence in front of the 18-yard box by converting a penalty in the recent 2-2 draw with Arsenal.
In a noteworthy incident during the Arsenal match, Palmer engaged in a heated discussion with Raheem Sterling regarding who should take the penalty.
Pochettino explained that there are several players capable of taking penalties, and the decision is made on the field, guided by their instincts.
He emphasized that there isn’t a designated penalty taker, but Palmer’s confidence in taking two penalties showcased his readiness.
The head coach mentioned that if Cole Palmer is on the pitch, he is likely to take the penalties, but he’s also comfortable with Raheem Sterling or Nicolas (Jackson) taking the responsibility.
Pochettino stressed that the key factor is the player’s willingness and the confidence to step up to the penalty spot.
