Former Enyimba FC star Chibuike Nwaiwu has stamped his foot in European football history after lifting the Austrian Cup with Wolfsberger AC in what can only be described as a dream debut season abroad.
On Thursday evening at the 28 Black Arena, Wolfsberger edged past Hartberg with a 1-0 victory in a tense Austrian Cup final to claim the trophy, Footballrover reports.
The showdown remained goalless until the 77th minute, when Angelo Gattermayer delivered the decisive blow—sending the Wolfsberger fans into jubilation with his powerful header and handing Nwaiwu his first major European honour.
Chibuike Nwaiwu shines in tense Austrian Cup final
In a game that demanded grit and composure, Chibuike Nwaiwu played his part as Wolfsberger kept their cool under pressure.
The Nigerian midfielder showed why he was a smart summer signing, helping his side remain composed throughout the tight contest.
The Cup victory doesn’t just add a trophy to Nwaiwu’s resume—it also means Wolfsberger will feature in the Europa League next season.
For a player in his first European campaign, it’s a monumental step forward.
From Enyimba glory to Austrian Cup winner
Having joined Wolfsberger AC in July 2024, Chibuike has now achieved something special: winning a major title in his first season for two different clubs.
Back in Nigeria, he lifted the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) trophy after joining Enyimba and making just 17 appearances.
Now, he’s done it again—this time on European soil.
Wolfsberger currently sit third in the Austrian Bundesliga table, just three points shy of leaders Austria Wien.
With a play-off match against Rapid Wien coming up on Sunday, there’s even a chance Nwaiwu could help his team complete a historic domestic double.
For Nwaiwu, this is more than just a title—from the NPFL to lifting the Austrian Cup. If this debut season is anything to go by, Europe hasn’t seen the best of him yet.
