Gillesphey’s opening rocked Stamford Bridge, but Azpilicueta equalised in the first half to bring the game back to live for the Thomas Tuchel side.

The Blues had to wait until the 106th minute for Alonso to score the game-winning goal, with Hardie having a penalty saved by Kepa with two minutes left in the fourth-round contest.

Chelsea will now travel to the Club World Cup, where they will face a semi-final match on Wednesday.

Plymouth, on the other hand, travel to Crewe the day before to begin their League One season.
