Cameroonian-born Breel Embolo was the man of the moment as his only goal was all Switzerland needed to secure victory and all three points against Cameroon during their World Cup game on Thursday afternoon.
Cameroon had the better opportunities in the World Cup opening match of Group G, which was scoreless at the break.
The finest opportunity for the African team came from Mbeumo, who sprinted down the left side of the box, overlooked Choupo-Moting in the middle, and fired a shot directly at Sommer.
After a rapid one-two between Mbeumo and Choupo-Moting later in the half, Hongla picked the ball up on the right and attempted a shot, but the Switzerland goalie saved it.
Despite having their best opportunity of the half through Akanji, Switzerland failed to get a shot on goal in the opening period. Vargas’ corner was met by the Man City player who leaped the highest, but he was unable to score.
Despite being the superior team in the first few minutes, Switzerland did not appear dangerous on attack.
Shaqiri struggled to have an influence during portions of the first half as he sat in a low block and Cameroon cleared most of the crosses that went into the area.

Three minutes into the second half, Switzerland quickly gained the advantage. Cameroon born – Breel Embolo, who was unmarked in the middle, slammed his shot past Onana from close range after Xhaka laid the ball down the right for Shaqiri to cut it across the box.

Embolo was found by Shaqiri with a cross from the right, and when the striker managed to elude the Cameroon defense, he smashed the ball into the net and his goal proved to be the winner that sealed all three points.
Embolo, born in Cameroon, scores against Cameroon for Switzerland and refused to celebrate his first World Cup goal.
After Switzerland took the lead through the AS Monaco forward at the start of second half, they didn’t allow Cameroon to create much the rest of the way until final whistle.
The Indomitable Lions have now lost each of their last 8 FIFA World Cupβ―matches.
