It was a proud moment for Bassey, who couldn’t contain his joy as he took to social media to celebrate, describing the moment as a special milestone in his career.

The strike was his first in 32 appearances for the three-time African champions, but it wasn’t enough to salvage the crucial three points needed for World Cup hopes.

Faith and belief as World Cup dream fades

While the Super Eagles have struggled in the 2026 qualifiers, Bassey remains optimistic about the journey ahead.

The Fulham defender, who felt “honoured to don the colours of Nigeria and deliver his first goal, admitted that the disappointing result against South Africa left the Eagles short.

Still, he stressed the team’s determination to keep pushing, adding that their hopes now rest on God.

— “Honoured to wear this shirt and score my first goal. We didn’t win, but we keep believing; if anyone can do it, it is God,” he wrote.

He added that:

— “I definitely have to frame this jersey from my first goal. The only decision now is whether to wash it or leave it as it is.”

Bassey, who has been a key figure in Nigeria’s defence, will now join forces with his teammates to battle Lesotho and Benin in their final two qualifiers later next month.
