Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey delivered a statement performance for Fulham, scoring his first goal of the season in a thrilling 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest.
The Nigerian international not only secured three crucial points for Marco Silva’s side but also silenced his teammates, who had doubted his scoring ability, Footballrover reports.
Calvin Bassey’s breakthrough: Moment to prove Fulham teammates wrong
Calvin Bassey, who has been a key figure in Fulham’s defensive setup, finally found the back of the net—and he couldn’t hide his excitement.
“The boys give me a bit of stick sometimes! But today I proved them wrong; I was able to get there, and for me it’s a proud moment, first goal this season,” Bassey said as quoted by the club’s official website.
The defender highlighted the team’s overall performance, emphasising that Fulham deserved the win.
He acknowledged the threat posed by Nottingham Forest’s counterattacks and stressed the importance of staying disciplined defensively.
He explained that they aimed to stay narrow but were not compact enough when conceding, allowing Chris Wood, who was in excellent form, to score.
However, Fulham responded well after conceding, focusing on maintaining possession and controlling the game.
Bassey noted that the team created numerous chances and could have scored more than two goals on another day.
Can Fulham push for European football?
With the victory, Fulham climbed to eighth in the Premier League, just five points behind fourth-placed Manchester City.
Naturally, questions arose about the team’s potential push for European competition, but Bassey remained cautious.
“Everyone always asks me about this European thing. For us, it’s just taking each game as it comes. Of course, our goal is to get there, but I think it’s just taking each game as it comes,” he said.
Calvin Bassey’s match-winning goal not only lifted Fulham in the standings but has also helped the team gain massive momentum.
