The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has instituted a new requirement for all head coaches, making CAF B licence mandatory.
Beginning with the 2023–24 season, NPFL Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, announced that only head coaches possessing the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) B licence will be allowed to sit on the bench during matches.
The decision to enforce this mandate is part of the league’s strategic efforts to enhance the technical performance of the clubs.
Owumi emphasised that having qualified managers on the bench is the only way to improve the technical performance of the league clubs through the players, which is one of the areas the NPFL board seeks to improve in the upcoming season.
This requirement marks a significant shift in the league’s approach to coaching standards.
Owumi further stated that for this season, the NPFL would only allow head coaches with a minimum qualification of the CAF B licence to sit on the bench.
He mentioned that it might be reviewed upwards in the following season, adding that the overarching idea was to encourage their coaches to enhance themselves through higher certifications by participating in reputable courses.
The move is poised to raise the level of coaching expertise in the NPFL, ultimately benefiting the players and the overall quality of the league.
As the 2023–24 season approaches, all eyes are on how this change will impact the technical performance and competitiveness of the league.
