Super Eagles defender Bruno Onyemaechi delivered an impressive performance for Boavista, but his efforts fell short as the team suffered a 3-2 home defeat to Casa Pia in the Portuguese Primeira Liga on Monday night.
Despite Onyemaechi’s goal and assist, Boavistaâs losing streak extended to three consecutive matches, leaving them in a precarious position, footballrover reports.
Bruno Onyemaechi shines despite Boavista’s struggles
The 26-year-old Nigerian international, who has been linked with moves to Turkish and Greek clubs, once again displayed his attacking instincts.
Onyemaechi netted his third goal of the season and provided an assist, yet Boavista failed to avoid another disappointing result.
The home side entered the match eager to end their losing streak after back-to-back defeats against FC Porto and Arouca but was ultimately outclassed.
The match at EstĂĄdio do Bessa SĂ©culo XXI started on a rough note for Onyemaechi, as he received a yellow card within the first four minutes, ruling him out of Boavista’s next fixture.
Casa Pia capitalised on defensive errors, scoring twice through own goals by Rodrigo Abascal and Filipe Ferreira in the 30th and 43rd minutes to establish a 2-0 lead.
However, Boavista showed signs of life just before halftime, with Bruno Onyemaechi stepping up in an advanced midfield role.
He pounced on a loose ball from a free kick, slotting it home at the stroke of half time. The goal was initially disallowed for offside but was later awarded after a VAR review, offering Boavista a glimmer of hope.
Late efforts not enough as Boavista’s poor run continues
Despite Bruno Onyemaechiâs contributions, Boavistaâs defensive frailties were exposed once more as Casa Pia restored their two-goal advantage just 10 minutes into the second half.
The situation worsened when Pedro Gomes was sent off, reducing Boavista to 10 men.
Unfazed by the setback, Onyemaechi continued to push forward and assisted RĂłbert BoĆŸenĂk, who found the net to bring Boavista back into contention.
However, their late surge proved insufficient as Casa Pia held firm to secure the win and all three points.
Onyemaechi completed the full 90 minutes, showing his attacking and defensive capabilities with a goal and an assist in what was an otherwise frustrating outing for his team.
Boavista’s winless streak now stretches to eight games, comprising five losses and three draws.
They remain at the bottom of the 18-team league table with just 12 points from 18 matches, having recorded only two wins this season.
Up next, Boavista will face a tough challenge against high-flying Braga, as they seek to turn their fortunes around.
