Central Coast Mariners have secured a remarkable new addition in two-time WSL champion Brooke Nunn, who is keen to represent Nigeria on the international stage.
This passionate midfielder joined the Mariners from Hibernian FC as she embarks on the upcoming season, bringing with her a wealth of experience and ambition, Footballrover reports.
Brooke Nunn’s Nigerian roots and passion for the game
Nunn’s dream journey to the Super Falcons is deeply intertwined with her heritage.
With a Nigerian mother and German roots, she is excited about the prospect of joining Nigeria’s Women’s National Team, which she considers a tremendous honor and a significant personal milestone.
Though both Nunn and her mother were born in England, her early years were spent in a foster home, shaping her unique perspective on identity and belonging.
Despite her previous youth international appearances for England, Nunn revealed that she never thought playing for Nigeria would be an option until recently.
According to her, the efforts of players like Ashleigh Plumptre have created a path for overseas-born athletes to don the green and white of the Super Falcons, inspiring her to pursue her dream.
The midfielder, who was quoted by brila FM, said,
“Initially, I didn’t think the possibility of playing for the Super Falcons was there a few years back because you don’t often see or hear of players that didn’t grow up in Nigeria within the squad.”
This evolving narrative in women’s football has reignited her hope and belief in her potential role with the national team.
A Bright Future Ahead with the Super Falcons
“I find it very motivating, and I want to be a symbol of this possibility,” she said.
As a versatile winger and midfielder, Nunn has an impressive footballing background. She honed her skills at Arsenal’s Academy, where she played a crucial role in securing Women’s Super League titles in 2011 and 2012.
At just 16, she was the youngest member of Arsenal’s Champions League squad in 2011.
Her journey has also seen her play for various clubs, including Turkish Super League side Altay S.K Women, as well as English Championship teams London Bees and London City Lionesses.
With her extensive experience now under her belt, the 31-year-old feels she’s now fully ready to bring her talent to Africa’s most successful national team, the Super Falcons, and contribute to their storied legacy.
