Bendel Insurance’s struggles at home have now reached a new low in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
With a fourth consecutive home match without a clean sheet, they are now tied with Lobi Stars for the worst record in this category, Footballrover reports.
But despite these challenges, the Benin-based side managed to secure a hard-fought victory against Plateau United on Matchday 15.
However, a closer look at the match reveals some surprising developments that might leave fans questioning the team’s current form.
First half goals and defensive issues: A new trend for Bendel Insurance
In an exciting encounter at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on Saturday, Insurance defeated Plateau United 2-1.
Uche Collins gave the home side an early lead in the 7th minute with a well-taken header from Julius Emiloju’s cross.
And just minutes later, their defence faltered. Playmaker Nnamdi Anthony made a costly error, fumbling an easy clearance and conceding a penalty to Plateau United.
Fortunately for the hosts, Doyeni Olawale’s penalty hit the woodwork, keeping the score at 1-0.
Plateau United didn’t let the missed penalty deter them, and in the 24th minute, they found an equaliser. Victor Dawa’s long-range shot, deflected by Dennis Chigozie, beat goalkeeper Joshua Baba.
Despite the setback, Bendel Insurance pushed hard to regain the lead before halftime but were unable to capitalise on several chances.
Second half turnaround for Bendel Insurance
After the break, Insurance came out more determined. Their persistence paid off in the 66th minute when Isaac Annor’s free kick found a well-positioned Kayode Oke, who headed the ball into the net to restore the lead.
The 2-1 scoreline remained intact, and the Benin Gunners secured all three points.
Looking ahead, the Benin Arsenals will be facing two tough away fixtures against Akwa United and Heartland FC in the next two rounds of the NPFL.
Coach Greg Ikhenoba expressed satisfaction with his team’s effort but stressed the need for continued improvement.
“The battle continues. We will keep working hard and getting better,” Ikhenoba stated in his post-match interview.
Meanwhile, Plateau United’s coach, Mbwas Mangnut, vowed to keep fighting for better results after the disappointing defeat.
Bendel Insurance’s performance in this match might not solve their home woes, but the victory adds an important three points to their campaign.
