Struggling Bayelsa United pulled off a stunning upset against Bendel Insurance FC on Match Day 18 of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), claiming a hard-fought 2-0 victory in the Niger-Delta Derby.

The Yenagoa encounter witnessed a clash of contrasting fortunes, with Bayelsa desperate for redemption languishing in 17th place, while Insurance, buoyed by a 2-0 home win over Rangers International last week, occupied a comfortable 7th position.

Despite Insurance’s initial confidence, it was Bayelsa United who seized control early on, Footballrover reports.

Captain Tekena Garando capitalised on a 17th-minute corner kick, heading home unmarked to send the home crowd into raptures.

Coach Monday Odigie responded with a triple substitution in the 65th minute, seeking an equaliser with Chukwudi Meze, Austin Ogunge, and Kelly Oahimijie replacing Osaghae Jr., Evans Ogbonda, and Chisom Okereke.

The tactical switch temporarily energised Insurance, but they remained toothless against a resolute Bayelsa defence.

As the tension mounted towards the final whistle, substitute Eyong Nneoyi Offem sent shockwaves through the Benin Arsenal camp.

In the first minute of added time, Offem pounced on a loose ball, slotting home the second goal to seal a crucial three points for Bayelsa United.

A deflated Coach Odigie admitted his side’s shortcomings, vowing to “go back and correct our mistakes” before their Week 19 encounter with Sporting Lagos on Saturday.
