Ashleigh Plumptre’s remarkable form in the Saudi Women’s Professional League continued on Saturday, but despite her goal, Al-Ittihad Ladies succumbed to a painful 4-2 home defeat to Al-Ahli.
The Super Falcons defender’s performance was one of the few bright spots in a high-stakes encounter that saw her side fall short yet again, Footballrover reports.
The 26-year-old Nigerian defender’s last goal contribution came on January 6th, when she played a role in an own goal that gave her team a narrow lead at halftime. However, it wasn’t enough as they suffered a 2-3 loss to rivals Al-Nassr.
Al-Ittihad’s struggles despite Ashleigh Plumptre’s goal
Plumptre, who captained Al-Ittihad, scored in the 84th minute to offer a glimmer of hope, but her efforts were not enough to mount a comeback.
The match unfolded with dramatic momentum shifts, beginning with Al-Ahli taking control after a 63rd-minute goal by Naomie Kabakaba.
A minute later, Alice Kusi doubled the lead. Although Leticia Nunes pulled one back for Al-Ittihad in the 72nd minute, Al-Ahli quickly responded, restoring their two-goal advantage just a minute later through Ibtissam Jraidi.
Al-Ittihad’s defeat to Al-Ahli leaves them in seventh place
With a stunning strike by Fadwa Khaled in the 80th minute, Al-Ahli extended their lead to 4-1.
Ashleigh Plumptre’s late goal was little more than a consolation, as Al-Ittihad fell to a disappointing 4-2 defeat at the Prince Faisal bin Fahad Stadium in Jeddah.
The Al-Ittihad’s defeat to Al-Ahli leave them in seventh place, with just 15 points in the league, and this loss follows a 4-1 away defeat to Al-Qadisiya Women, marking back-to-back defeats for the team.
Al-Ittihad will now look to bounce back when they face Al-Ula next Friday.
