Montpellier’s struggles in Ligue 1 deepened over the weekend as Super Eagles hopeful Akor Adams won a penalty but couldn’t prevent his side from collapsing to a 3-1 defeat against Angers.
Despite Adams’ efforts, 9-man Montpellier suffered their third consecutive loss, with no hope of escape from relegation, footballrover reports.
Akor Adams’ effort not enough to save 9-man Montpellier
Akor Adams, determined to make an impact, earned a crucial penalty after being fouled by Emmanuel Biumla.
Captain TĂ©ji Savanier converted the spot-kick in the 61st minute, bringing Montpellier level after Esteban Lepaul’s first-half opener for Angers.
However, Adams’ performance was overshadowed by Montpellier’s poor discipline and defensive lapses.
Montpellierâs situation worsened when Kiki KouyatĂ© was sent off in the 84th minute for a second yellow card.
Just two minutes later, Jordan Ferri received a straight red, leaving Montpellier reduced to nine men.
Angers capitalised on their numerical advantage as Zinedine Ferhat sealed the victory with a stoppage-time goal, handing Montpellier their seventh winless game in a row.
Relegation fears grow for Akor Adams and Montpellier
The defeat leaves the Nigerian forward and 9-man Montpellier anchored at the bottom of the Ligue 1 table, sitting 18th with just nine points from 17 matches.
Adams, who last scored in September with a brace against Auxerre, has now gone three months without finding the net.
Montpellierâs last win came on November 10 in a 3-1 victory over Brest. Since then, they have endured five defeats and two draws, raising serious concerns about their survival in Ligue 1.
Their next challenge is a daunting clash against Monaco on Friday, where the 24-year-old Nigerian and his struggling teammates must find a way to halt their alarming slump.
Failure to turn things around could leave Montpellier deeper in relegation trouble, with time quickly running out.
