Egypt and Mali Secure Olympic Games Spot in U-23 Africa Cup of Nations

The two teams will now compete for a chance to participate in the men’s football event at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

In the third round of Group B matches held on Saturday, July 1, 2023, Egypt defeated Gabon 2-0 at the Grand Stade de Tanger in Morocco, while Mali emerged victorious with a 2-0 win over Niger at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat.

These victories ensured that Egypt (7 points) and Mali (6 points) finished in the top two spots of the group, qualifying them for the semi-final stage of the continental football championship.

During the match between Egypt and Gabon, Mahmoud Saber and Osama Faisal scored the first and second goals for the Pharaohs, respectively.

Saber found the back of the net in the 82nd minute of the second half, while Faisal scored in the second minute of second-half extra time.

Gabon was reduced to 10 men in the 42nd minute of the first half when Roy Mbonguin was sent off by the referee.

In the match between Mali and Niger Republic, Mamadou Sangare and Cheickna Doumbia were the heroes for Mali.

Sangare scored the first goal for Mali in the 49th minute, and Doumbia sealed the victory with a goal in the 89th minute of the second half.

With their respective wins, Egypt and Mali have advanced to the next stage of the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations and are now set to face each other for a chance to compete in the men’s football event at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
