The Atalanta forward expressed his evolving understanding of what it means to play for Nigeria, highlighting a journey of personal and cultural discovery, Footballrover reports.

Having previously played for England’s youth teams, from U-19 to U-21, Lookman made his senior debut for Nigeria in 2022, in a goalless draw against Ghana during the final round of the African qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

After his debut, he has been capped 26 times, finding the back of the net eight times, three of which came during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.

In the recent 2025 AFCON qualifiers, Lookman proved to be a vital asset for Nigeria in the games against Benin Republic, Rwanda, and Libya.

He netted two goals in Nigeria’s 3-0 win over Benin and contributed to the attacking efforts in matches against Rwanda and Libya, although those efforts were unfortunately ruled offside.

Reflecting on his commitment to Nigeria, Lookman shared insights with France Football via TMW regarding his heartfelt choice to represent the country.

“I have come to understand this over time. Although I played for England at the youth level and celebrated victory in the U20 World Cup in 2017, I chose to wear the Super Eagles colours because my heart is deeply connected to this nation,” he explained.

Following a remarkable season that saw him inspire Nigeria to reach the AFCON final, the 26-year-old forward has been nominated for the prestigious Ballon d’Or.
