Super Eagles star Ademola Lookman continued his impressive form for Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night, providing an assist in their Champions League clash against Tottenham.
Despite his contribution, it wasn’t enough to secure an away victory for the Spanish side in a five-goal thrilling encounter, Footballrover reports.
Ademola Lookman Sets Up Atletico Goal as La Liga Giants Overturn Early Deficit
The Nigerian international set up the second goal as the La Liga giants overturned an early deficit to take a 2-1 lead.
However, Atletico eventually succumbed to a 3-2 defeat on the night. Despite the loss in London, they managed to beat the Premier League side 7-5 on aggregate, successfully securing their progression from the Round of 16.
This marked the 28-year-old winger’s first Champions League assist for Atletico, bringing his total goal contributions for the season to seven in 14 appearances.
Since joining from Atalanta during the winter transfer window, Lookman has found his rhythm quickly, tallying one goal in La Liga, two goals and two assists in the Copa del Rey, and a goal and an assist in European competition.
Lookman was a constant threat throughout the match, ending the night as the most fouled player on the pitch (3).
He featured for 64 minutes before being replaced by Alexander Sorloth as Atletico looked to see out the result.
Tottenham Hotspur secured their first win under Igor Tudor with a thrilling 3-2 home victory over Atlético Madrid, but it wasn’t enough to overturn a 7-5 aggregate deficit in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.
Tottenham Win Isn’t Enough as Lookman’s Assist Seals Atletico Progress
Atlético struck early, with Lookman’s goal ruled out for offside, and Mathys Tel creating early chances that tested Spurs’ goalkeeper Juan Musso.
Tottenham opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark when Tel’s cross found Randal Kolo Muani.
Atlético responded quickly after halftime, with Lookman assisting Julián Álvarez’s top-corner strike to level the tie.
Spurs fought back as Xavi Simons curled in a 25-yard goal, and although Musso denied several efforts, Dávid Hancko’s header restored Atlético’s advantage.
Spurs still managed a consolation penalty from Simons late on. Despite the victory, Atlético’s resilient performance ensured their progression.
